Tree Lighting Ceremony

The 4th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony took place last Thursday 15th December. It was a fantastic community occasion with the Cranmore Regeneration Office, Cranmore Co-op Volunteers , Abbeyquarter Centre and the Springboard Resource House.
Over 200 residents came to see the Christmas tree blessed by Fr. Steve Walsh and local community sister, Sr. Rita Garty.
Children from the Rose Tully AfterSchool Project sang Christmas Carols as local children hung lovely homemade stars representing the deceased family members on the tree. Thanks to Jim Maguire aka Bunny who was MC for the occasion.
Sligo Rovers Heroes switched on the lights and then posed for photos and signed autographs to the delight of the crowd.
Santa arrived in, what has become a tradition, in a local fire engine driven by Seamus Duffy and took his place in his grotto in the Abbeyquarter Centre. Over 130 children received selection boxes kindly sponsored by the local Residents Associations and the Sisters of Mercy.

Thanks to John Carolan for his wonderful good natured joviality and to Christopher Lynott and Jonathan Carolan who were Santa’s little helpers!!

Thanks to Lorna Kavaghan and Niki Ogun who decorated the grotto.

The Mens Group then lit and let off in to the night 35 sky lanterns in rememberance of deceased members of the community.
Refreshments were served afterwards with cakes and buns made by the young people in the Drop In for this occasion.
We would also like to thank John Gilmartin for sponsoring the milk and Bertie from Gallaghers Bakery for sponsoring breads and cakes
To finish off the evening entertainment was provided by ‘Happy feet Troupe’ and ‘Step it up Troupe’ with the Gillian Finan Dancers and ‘Fun Fit Troup ‘with Stacy Carty Dancers.

A disco finished off what was a very happy and memorable event. It was a joy to watch the community come together with all the hard work of our volunteers behind the scenes making it such a success and happy occasion. A huge thank you to everyone who helped and took part in this community event.
